We drive along the Enguri Gorge and up into the mountains. Once you reach an altitude of 1,500 meters, you can find Mestia, the center of government for Upper Svaneti. This place is amazing in terms of the views and the buildings. It is surrounded by towering peaks more than 5,000 meters high.
Svaneti is one of the most unique and historically important places in Georgia. It is also a great place to ski. Svaneti was known for its beautiful house towers, most dating back to the 12th or 13th century, until not too long ago. These house towers were built on the sides of the valleys to keep an eye out for attacks.
A long time ago, every respectable Svan family had its tower. It was their safe place when there was trouble. The buildings have been kept as quiet reminders of those times, and the graceful beauty of their architecture still makes us happy. Something about the place makes you feel like time has stopped for good.
Svans are unique people with a unique way of life, which also makes their culture unique. In modern life, they still use their native language and customs, as well as their unique style of building and old rituals. Near Mestia's central square, you might see people driving cattle out to pasture. You can also get freshly baked khachapuri (cheese bread) at a bakery in a stone building that dates back hundreds of years.
After eating in Mestia, we'll drive you back to the hotel and drop you there. You decide to stay the night in Svaneti and spend the next day exploring beautiful nature.
